The paperwork scares expats more than a worn clutch does — and that's exactly how bad sellers win. Here is what each document means, the deadlines that matter, and a service where we simply do it all for you.
The DUA — the car's single registration document
The Documento Único Automóvel merges the old title and logbook: owner, VIN, plate and first-registration date (check that date and country — it reveals quietly imported cars). After a sale a new DUA is issued and posted to the new owner; in practice it arrives within a few weeks. You can legally drive with the transfer receipt while it's in the post.
Ownership transfer (registo) — the step you must never postpone
The transfer must be registered after purchase — online via Automóvel Online or at a registry desk (IRN), cost around €55–65. Until it's filed, fines, tolls and the IUC belong to the seller on paper and to chaos in practice. Never hand over money or keys without doing the registo together, the same day.
COC and homologation — for imported cars
The Certificate of Conformity proves the exact model was EU-approved. It's requested from the manufacturer (free to ~€200 depending on brand) and is required to matriculate an imported car alongside the IMT forms (Modelo 9 for homologation). We obtain COCs as part of every import we handle.
IUC — the annual road tax trap
The IUC depends on the first-registration date: post-2007 cars are taxed on CO₂ and can cost several times more than an older equivalent. Always check the real IUC before buying — it's the classic expat surprise. Our reports flag it on every inspection.

How long does the DUA take to arrive?
Usually a few weeks by post after the transfer is registered. Meanwhile the transfer receipt proves ownership — keep it in the car.
How much does an ownership transfer cost?
Around €55 online and slightly more over the counter. A despachante or lawyer typically charges €100–200 on top for doing the same thing — that's the service we bundle into our deal support.
Can I buy a car in Portugal without residency?
You need a Portuguese NIF (tax number); residency itself is not required to own a car. Insurance and address details are where non-residents usually need help — ask us.
What is Modelo 112 / Modelo 9?
IMT forms used in registration and homologation procedures — mostly relevant for imported cars. If you're importing, we fill and file them as part of the service.
