Car History Check in Portugal — What You Can Actually Verify

There is no single "Carfax for Portugal" — but a Portuguese car leaves a paper trail that can be read if you know where to look. Here is what really exists, what foreign VIN services cover, and what we verify on every inspection.

The DUA and registration records

The registration document shows the current owner, VIN and the first-registration date and country. A recent Portuguese first registration on an older car means it was imported — its earlier life happened abroad, outside Portuguese records.

IPO history — the mileage lie detector

Every periodic inspection (IPO) records the odometer. A car's IPO history draws a mileage curve over the years — clocked cars break that curve. This is the single strongest anti-fraud check in Portugal and we read it on every inspection.

Liens, finance and legal blocks

A car with an unpaid loan or a court lien (penhora) cannot be safely bought — the debt follows the car, not the seller. The registry check reveals it before money changes hands.

Foreign VIN reports — for imported cars

For cars that lived abroad, services like autoDNA, carVertical or Carfax (for US imports) can show accidents, mileage snapshots and auction photos from the origin country. Useful — but they are a complement, not a substitute for a physical inspection: paint gauge and welds tell the truth reports miss.

History check is built into every inspection

On every €150 pre-purchase inspection we cross-check the DUA against the VIN on the body, read the IPO mileage history, check for liens and open finance, and flag quiet imports. Want a history check on a car we're not inspecting? Message us — we'll quote it in chat.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Carfax for Portugal?

Not as such. Portuguese history lives in separate places — registration records, IPO mileage history, the liens registry. Foreign VIN services only help for cars imported from abroad. We pull the pieces together as part of the inspection.

Can mileage fraud be detected?

Very often, yes: the IPO history records the odometer at every periodic inspection, and OBD data plus wear patterns fill the gaps. If the story doesn't add up, it goes in the report.

Can you check a car before I even go see it?

Yes — send the listing on WhatsApp. A pre-check of documents and history often kills a bad candidate for a fraction of the cost of a wasted trip.

What about cars imported from Germany or France?

We combine the Portuguese records with a foreign VIN report from the origin country — that's the standard approach for imports and it's part of how we work every import inspection.

Does autoDNA or carVertical work for Portuguese cars?

For cars that have always lived in Portugal they usually show very little — the national records are not in those databases. Their real value is for imported cars: German, French or Belgian history, auction photos, recorded mileages. We order and interpret the right report for the car's origin and cross-check it physically at the inspection.
